ABSTRACT

Facile and sensitive analysis methods for pharmaceutical contaminants in aqueous environment are of vital importance for water safety, especially when large amounts of anti-viral drugs are being used, discharged and accumulated. In this work, we used functional metal-organic framework (MOF) as high-performance adsorbent for selective enrichment of such pharmaceutical contaminants in aqueous samples. The MOF was synthesized via a new synthesis method previously developed by our group and immobilized on paper membrane to be used in solid-phase extraction (SPE) device. Different metal ions were anchored by MOF to screen out the adsorbent with the best affinity. The targets were a potential anti-COVID-19 drug favipiravir, and its structural and functional analogues (ingredients or intermediates, other anti-viral drugs). To deeply understand the adsorption mechanisms, quantum calculation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation were both applied. The experimental and in-silico results together demonstrated that the as-prepared MOF adsorbent possessed high affinity and fast dynamics. The established SPE-based liquid chromatography (LC) method worked well in the range of 10-1000 ng/mL, with only 3 mg of adsorbent per device and 5 mL sample needed, and no mass spectrometer (MS) included, which was very efficient compared to commercial adsorbents. The results met the current detection needs in the application scenario, and inspirable for later design of well-behaved adsorbents.

ABSTRACT

The chloroxylenol (PCMX) has shown well virucidal efficacy against COVID-19, but the large-scale utilization of which will undoubtedly pose extra environmental threaten. In the present study, the recycled industrial phenylenediamine residue was used and an integrated strategy of "carbonization-casting-activation" using super low-dose of activator and templates was established to achieve in-situ N/O co-doping and facile synthesis of a kind of hierarchical hyperporous carbons (HHPC). The sample of HHPC-1.25-0.5 obtained with activator and template to residue of 1.25 and 0.5 respectively shows super-high specific surface area of 3602 m2/g and volume of 2.81 cm3/g and demonstrates remarkable adsorption capacity of 1475 mg/g for PCMX in batch and of 1148 mg/g in dynamic column adsorption test. In addition, the HHPC-1.25-0.5 exhibits excellent reusability and tolerance for PCMX adsorption under various ionic backgrounds and real water matrix conditions. The combined physio-chemistry characterization, kinetic study and DFT calculation reveal that the enhanced high performances originate from the hierarchical pore structure and strong electrostatic interaction between PCMX and surface rich pyridinic-N and carbonyl groups.

ABSTRACT

Since the 1990s, food safety has caused widespread concern from all walks of life. According to the theory of bibliometrics and scientific knowledge map and knowledge mining method, this paper quantitatively analyzed and visualized 3024 food safety papers and 31032 references in the core collection of Web of Science (WoS) to explore their research status, topic evolution and development trend. The number of academic papers in the field of international food safety increased by 11 times during the past 31 years;the knowledge structure of this field consists of foodborne pathogenic bacteria, food safety cognition, public health and food safety management;its research topics showed an evolution from consumer behavior and food-borne diseases to food safety risk management, food safety governance, food traceability system, food testing, to food global value chain, heavy metal excess, pesticide residues, food safety culture, to blockchain technology, Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, food fraud;food safety knowledge and willingness to pay premium, food contamination, aquatic seafood safety, vegetable safety, blockchain, COVID-19 represent the frontier trends, so as to provide references for academic research and government supervision in this field.

ABSTRACT

On behalf of the Federal Office for Agriculture (FOAG), Agroscope monitors the production and distribution of food for livestock and pets. The main purpose of its activity is to prevent harmful substances and undesirable products from being fed to animals and reaching consumers' plates through foodstuffs of animal origin. Controls also help to protect owners of animals against fraud and to preserve animal health and the environment. Official Food Control enforcement activities for animals have also been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic and inspections had to be completely suspended. However, it was possible to resume them after a short period, although in a limited way, by applying the necessary hygiene and precautionary measures. In order to protect the inspectors and employees of the companies inspected, controls have been suspended for fifteen days in March, and then were resumed until the end of the year, but by being announced and by favouring the taking of samples. In this way it was possible to minimize contact with people and counter the spread of the virus by respecting the prescribed protection measures. The integration carried out at the end of 2019 of all the data relating to inspections, companies and products in a new laboratory information management system (LIMS) proved to be successful, although many optimizations and improvements had to be made. Due to increased data security and integration into a interdisciplinary system, production companies of animal feed thus benefited from more shipments, inspection report improved and there were more user-friendly presentation of test results in the product control report. Inspection reports were all able to be sent quickly and those of the checks of products were able to be sent following the analyses and necessary repetitions, thus guaranteeing a return of information in a timely manner. As in previous years, we also observed an increase of more than the average of new registrations/approvals companies in the animal feed sector. While 2019 can be considered a calm year in terms of feed safety, Salmonella was detected in eight animal feeds in 2020, representing 4 separate cases. In one sample, an overrun of the maximum value of coccidiostats according to appendix 10 of OLALA was detected. In 4 other samples, the authorizations issued for the addition of coccidiostats according to animal species had expired. GMOs were detected in two food samples for production animals, one of which was authorized but was not been declared. The second case concerns the contamination of undesirable seeds without germination power in linseed. In addition, GMOs exceeding the tolerance threshold have been detected in three bird feed mixtures and in another ambrosia seed mixture. These products were withdrawn from the market immediately. A total of 1,217 feed samples for livestock and for pets were analysed. 814 were compliant or had minor reporting errors. With a compliance rate of 66.9%, there was a slight improvement compared to the previous year (approx. 65%). With regard to nonconformities, it can be seen that minor non-conformities have decreased compared to last year (5.8%, previous year 12.4%). On the other hand, major non-conformities increased, from 2.6% in 2019 to 4.7% in 2020. Average non-compliances remained at the same level as the previous year, at around 23%.

ABSTRACT

In order to highlight the impact of the pandemic phenomenon, especially on the wide use of antibiotics and biocides on bacterial communities, 3 Romanian interest regions were studied during 2019-2020. Every year, three wastewater sampling campaigns were organized from Covid-19 hospitals and WWTPs. The effluents were subjected to quantitative analysis for the determination of fecal coliform bacteria by the MPN (Most Probable Number) method using Colilert-18 medium (Idexx). The positive control (Escherichia coli ATCC25922, Citrobacter freundii ATCC 8090 and Enterobacter aerogenes ATCC 13048) and the negative one (Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212) were tested. In the same time, a blank control with sterile distilled water was analyzed. Hospital effluents did not show high densities of coliform bacteria at the beginning of the pandemic, but the values of these indicators were high (an average of over 5x105 CFU/100mL) in the WWTP. With the evolution of the pandemic, the treatment plants have streamlined their treatment processes, so that by the end of 2019 the densities of coliform bacteria remained around 5x104 CFU/100mL. While in mid-2020 the density of coliform bacteria decreased in hospital effluents, an increase can be observed in WWTP. In conclusion, the inversely proportional distribution of the densities of coliform bacteria in the hospital compared to WWTP, could be explained by the action of biocides and antibiotics on the microorganisms in the hospital environment that determined their decrease in wastewater.

ABSTRACT

The discovery, the commercial success, and the social use of ivermectin (IVM) were always recognized worldwide and gave the authors the Nobel price of Medicine/Physiology in 2015. It exclusive endectocide activity and safety, allowed its immediate integration in various health protocols to virtually all animal species, including humans. Even tough, the large-scale use of IVM in high frequency has caused the selection of resistant parasites. As IVM is a multitarget product, it is being repositioning to act against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Environmental protection must also be considered, as the environment elimination of IVM may affect marine ecosystems and unassisted communities with low social development, with low access to safe water and to proper sewage systems.

ABSTRACT

The chemical-dependent model imposed by agribusiness exposes Brazilian society to pesticides associated with dangerous effects on human health and the environment. The hastening of the neoliberal agenda in the government worsens the pesticide exposure due to policy dismantling that creates protective mechanisms. Thus, this article focuses on Brazilian pesticide regulatory policy dismantling from 2019 to 2020. This descriptive cross-sectional study analyzed statutes, court decisions, documents, and technical reports published between January 2019 and January 2021, but with legal effects until December 2020. We observed the release of an unprecedented number of pesticides and the easing of Brazilian regulatory statutes, whose impacts affect intensely vulnerable groups. It is pointed out that biopower practices mediate the association between agribusiness and deepening of vulnerabilities, which serve the interests of financial capital and determine who should bear the costs of the capitalist mode of production. The Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil worsens this situation, expressing the government necropolitics, which reveals itself as a strategy to eradicate traditional peoples and communities, blacks, poor and rural populations.

ABSTRACT

Drugs are used in veterinary medicine to prevent or treat animal diseases. When rationally administered to livestock following Good Veterinary Practices (GVP), they greatly contribute to improving the production of food of animal origin. Since humans can be exposed chronically to veterinary drugs through the diet, residues in food are evaluated for effects following chronic exposures. Parameters such as an acceptable daily intake (ADI), the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL), maximum residue limits (MRLs), and the withdrawal periods (WPs) are determined for each drug used in livestock. Drug residues in food exceeding the MRLs usually appear when failing the GVP application. Different factors related either to the treated animal or to the type of drug administration, and even the type of cooking can affect the level of residues in edible tissues. Residues above the MRLs can have a diverse negative impact, mainly on the consumer's health, and favor antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Drug residue monitoring programmes are crucial to ensure that prohibited or authorized substances do not exceed MRLs. This comprehensive review article addresses different aspects of drug residues in edible tissues produced as food for human consumption and provides relevant information contributing to rational pharmacotherapy in food-producing animals.
